Stirling

Stirling is home to some of Scotland’s most historic buildings, from traditional townhouses and listed properties to historic hospitality spaces. Many retain their original windows, where improving comfort and energy efficiency needs to be balanced with protecting the character and fabric of the building.

Take a closer look at our work at King Street Aparthotel, where bespoke InvisiTherm® secondary glazing was installed across the original windows to improve guest comfort while preserving the character and integrity of this historic building.

The challenge

Located in the heart of Stirling, King Street Aparthotel occupies a historic building where improving comfort and energy efficiency had to be carefully balanced with preserving its original character.

With the aparthotel situated on one of Stirling’s most iconic streets, reducing external noise in the bedrooms was an important consideration for guest comfort. At the same time, improving heat retention and reducing heat loss were key to creating a more comfortable and energy-efficient environment for guests.

Any solution also needed to work sympathetically with the building's existing windows, ensuring that it retained its historic character and architectural features.

Our solution

Cocoon designed and installed bespoke InvisiTherm® secondary glazing across the existing windows. The system provides an additional internal layer of glazing, helping to reduce external noise and improve thermal comfort and heat retention, while its discreet, reversible design allows the existing windows and architectural character of the building to remain untouched.

The difference

The completed installation has enhanced comfort throughout the aparthotel, creating quieter, warmer rooms while retaining the character of the original windows.

Improved acoustic comfort

Reduced external noise for guests staying in the city-centre aparthotel.

Up to 60% improved heat retention

Helping to improve thermal comfort and reduce heat loss.

Reduced condensation

Helping create a more comfortable environment throughout the building.

Original windows retained

A sympathetic, reversible solution designed around the existing windows.

As Managing Director Neil Munday explains

“...you do not have to choose between preservation and performance. This system will allow us to significantly improve energy efficiency, reduce heat loss, and enhance guest comfort, all while keeping the original fabric of the building intact.”
