Historic Church
Converted into a home
The challenge
This remarkable historic church has been converted into a beautiful home, retaining many of the distinctive features of its original architecture.
The owners came to Cocoon looking to improve warmth and reduce draughts and heat loss while retaining the character of the original windows.
Among the most challenging were the exceptionally large arched leaded windows, as well as a striking circular window in the lounge, measuring over 2.5 metres in diameter and featuring an intricate floral detail.
The scale and complexity of the arched windows also meant that indoor scaffolding was required to safely access and work with them.
The challenge was to improve the thermal comfort of the home without compromising the distinctive windows and architectural details that make this home so special.
Our solution
Cocoon designed bespoke InvisiTherm® secondary glazing around the individual requirements of the building and its unusual windows.
The exceptionally large arched leaded windows required careful planning, specialist access and indoor scaffolding to allow the installation to be completed safely and precisely.
The circular lounge window presented an additional challenge. Measuring over 2.5 metres in diameter, the secondary glazing was designed and installed in five sections, carefully arranged to accommodate the intricate floral detail while maintaining the visual impact of the original window.
Each section was individually designed to work with the shape and character of the existing window, providing an additional layer of insulation while leaving the original features untouched.
The difference
The completed installation has helped reduce draughts and heat loss, creating a warmer and more comfortable home while allowing the original windows to remain an important part of the building.
The large arched leaded windows and distinctive circular lounge window continue to provide the character and visual interest of the former church, with InvisiTherm® designed to sit sympathetically alongside them. Contact our team to discuss your specific needs.
A historic building, made comfortable for modern life
The windows in this home are more than simply part of the building — they are part of its story.
From the scale of the arched leaded windows to the intricate floral detail of the circular lounge window, each feature required a carefully considered approach.
InvisiTherm® allowed these original features to remain at the heart of the home while introducing modern thermal comfort from within.
This is a wonderful example of how sensitive improvements can help historic buildings continue to be enjoyed as modern homes.
By retaining its original windows and introducing bespoke secondary glazing, the property benefits from improved warmth and comfort while continuing to celebrate the character of its past.
